The famous water is only one layer of western Crete. Turn inland and the distances become more interesting: cultivated foothills, plane-tree squares, abandoned hamlets and mountain roads that make an hour feel valuable.
Apokoronas in the morning
Start among the springs and villages east of Chania. Vamos, Douliana and Gavalochori reward walking without an agenda. A local history museum or ceramics workshop gives useful context before lunch.
The Theriso road
The drive through Theriso Gorge begins almost at the city edge, then narrows between vertical rock. Continue beyond the village for broad views and return through orange country rather than retracing every kilometre.
Kissamos and the olive landscape
West of the city, small producers explain oil as agriculture rather than souvenir. Harvest timing, milling temperature and storage matter; a tasting becomes far more vivid when followed by a drive through the trees themselves.
