A village is not compelling simply because it is old. These five offer a specific combination of setting, everyday life and a worthwhile route around them.
Theriso and Lakkoi
Theriso is reached through a dramatic gorge and carries an important political history. Higher Lakkoi opens towards the White Mountains and makes a natural stop on the Omalos road.
Vamos and Gavalochori
Vamos has the structure of a small regional centre, with good food and restored houses. Gavalochori rewards closer attention to wells, local craft and the agricultural landscape around it.
Milia
Milia is less a conventional village than a restored mountain settlement. The forested approach, stone buildings and kitchen make it a destination, especially outside the hottest months.
Five villages do not belong in one rushed day. Choose two, add a producer or walk, and allow lunch to take its proper time.
