The answer depends on wind, season and what you want around the swim. Falassarna feels open and elemental; Elafonissi is shallow, luminous and reached through a longer landscape journey.
Choose Falassarna for space
The broad west-facing beach absorbs people better and gives the sunset room to perform. It also takes the wind directly. On a calm day it is the easy choice for long swimming and an unhurried return.
Choose Elafonissi for the journey
Leave early and treat the drive as part of the day. The road crosses villages and a gorge before reaching shallow lagoon water. Walk beyond the first arrival area to find quieter edges.
When to choose neither
A strong westerly, a late start in August or simple travel fatigue are good reasons to stay nearer Chania. A small Akrotiri cove can be the more intelligent pleasure.
We check live wind and access conditions each morning; the coast should suit the day, not the reputation.
