For one effortless hour
Nea Chora is walkable from the house and best early, before the beach day gathers momentum. East of town, the Akrotiri coves offer clear water and a useful pairing with a late lunch.
For open western water
Falassarna is expansive rather than intimate. Arrive before ten, choose a quieter stretch away from the central beds and stay for the changing light—unless the westerly wind has other plans.
For a full expedition
Balos and Elafonissi deserve deliberate timing. A private boat changes Balos completely; Elafonissi is gentler at the edges of the day. Neither improves through hurried checklist travel.
