A car is useful for remote western Crete, but it is a burden inside the Old Town. Many of Chania’s best days begin on foot and need no keys at all.
Walk the city in layers
Old Town, Splantzia, Koum Kapi and Nea Chora fit into a comfortable day with long pauses. Add Halepa on another morning for architecture, museums and a different shoreline.
Use buses selectively
Intercity buses serve several beaches and towns, especially in season. They are economical and usually straightforward, but schedules deserve checking the evening before rather than assumption.
Transfer for the difficult day
A private driver is valuable when the route includes wineries, multiple villages or a gorge endpoint. Use one for the day that needs it, not the entire stay.
